In order to evaluate the importance of honesty in Christianity, it is needful to know what both the words denote and portend.
Honesty, simply defined, denotes the quality of being honest. It therefore portends truthfulness, genuineness, fairness, sincerity and positive morality. Honesty, it is said, is the best policy.
Christianity denotes the religion based on the life and teaching of Jesus Christ. It portends the acquisition and implementation of the Word of God which He inspired certain individuals (prophets – 2 Peter 1:20-21) to write down in order to teach humankind about what is true and to make realise what is wrong in our lives (2 Timothy 3:16-17). These holy words of God make up the HOLY BIBLE which involves the Old Testament and the New Testament.
Christianity, the acquisition and implementation of the Word of God basically emphasises the need for honesty. From the book of Genesis in the old testament to the book of Revelation in the new testament, honesty is repeatedly emphasised as the divine requirement of God from the believers in Christ. Right from the beginning of creation, God required from His people. This involved the Ten Commandments which He gave to the covenant community (Exodus 20). This is confirmed by David in Psalm 51:6.
What therefore is required of Christians?
“Therefore, brothers, pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we will appoint to this duty” – Acts 6:3
God wants us to be mankind of honest report (Acts 6:3); people who are known for their wisdom, understanding and implementation of the Word of God (Deuteronomy 1:13).
We must be honourable at all times and not avenge our enemies (Romans 12:17). We must not be involved in worldly things but live admirable, righteous and convincing lives (1 Peter 2:11-12).
Why do we need to be honest?
The full acquisition and implementation of the Word of God, i.e. total honesty as expected of a Christian, is a confirmed basis for a wonderful future for the honest child of God. God will rescue the godly and be his fortress in times of trouble. God will help and rescue him from the wicked. He will save him and be his shelter (Psalm 37:37-40).
Let’s therefore be encouraged to remain honest, steadfast and faithful in our decision to serve God through His son, our Saviour and Redeemer Jesus Christ. For God gave His life for us that whoever believes in Him should not die but have everlasting life (John 3:15-16).
Note that God is not a man that He should lie nor is He the son of a man that He should repent. Has he said, and will He not do it? (Numbers 23:19).
