“Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old”
– Isaiah 43:18
Do you sometimes feel like you aren’t good enough? A past action or failure that seems to always creep back on you, making you feel unworthy and not the person God wants you to be. Or it could be what someone said about you or to you which made you doubt your true identity.
Here are two ways to rediscovering your true identity as a Christian.
Leave the Past Behind
“Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away. Behold, the new has come!” – 2 Corinthians 5:17
Christ came to redeem us from our sins and through Him we are set free from the former things; our old self. However we sometimes hold on to the things of the past as part of our identity. Be it a mistake, trials or failures; God wants us to leave the past behind in order for us to live in the newness of life bought through the blood of Jesus. We have been set free through Jesus so let us be encouraged to live the good life GOD has plan for us.
Rely on the Word of God
God has breathed life into all of Scripture. It is useful for teaching us what it is true. It is useful for correcting our mistakes. It is useful for making our lives whole again. It is useful for training us to do what is right (2 Timothy 3:16).
What does the Bible say about God’s Children?
“For we are fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalms 139:14)
“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, so that we should walk in them” (Ephesians 2:10)
“We are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden” (Matthew 5:14)
If we believe that the Word of God is alive and true, then we believe everything it says about our identity in Christ Jesus. We are the light of the world, made fearfully and wonderfully and created to belong to Jesus. God made us so that we can do good things. And through His Word, we are fully equipped with all that we need to live a complete and holy life for God (2 Timothy 3:17).
Sometimes circumstances and situations in life brings us to moments where we begin to doubt ourselves. We question our identity and whether we are able to overcome. We may start to think we aren’t good enough to endure, to grow or be strong to stand firm. However let’s always be encouraged to stand on the Word of God. Let the Word be like a lamp that shows you the way to go and like a light that guides you on the path to take.
Let also be reminded to leave the past behind, for they don’t form the basis of who we are. Our true identity lies in the One who died on the cross for our sins. Our identity is found in Christ Jesus. Through Christ, we are good enough to move on from the past. Through Christ, we are good enough to try again on things we once had numerous failures on. Through Christ Jesus, we are strong enough to overcome. Through Christ, we are good enough to live the godly life.
God Bless.
